Kevin Kwan, who is now 44-years old, left Singapore when he was 11 and moved with his family to Houston, Texas. The author has lived in the United States since 1990 and if convicted, Kwan will be ordered to pay up to $10,000 and serve up to three years in prison. In addition, the ministry of defense states that Kwan has stayed away from the country without the official permission needed. Singapore's ministry of defense recently announced that Kwan had avoided their national service. While Kevin Kwan is from Singapore, he was not present for the premiere of Crazy Rich Asians. The people he meets along the way add so much to this story too and they not only affect us but Musashi as well. Because of his brutish and violent ways, a lot of people think he’s something like a demon, but we as the reader, know he’s so much more than that and we really see him develop and grow over the course of the volumes. If you are new to Vagabond, the story follows Miyamoto Musashi on his journey to become the greatest swordsman. For these reasons and more, it is my second favorite seinen manga of all-time right behind Berserk by the one and only Kentaro Miura. Not only that, but the series has a strong cast of characters that grow and develop in a way that's not just relatable but interesting as well. Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue, who is also the creator of Slam Dunk and Real, features realistic art and a story that, while rooted in history, feels larger-than-life. 6/22/2023 0 Comments Sarina bowen boyfriendWrong! First and Foremost, I just want to personally thank the author for giving me an ARC (Advance Reader’s Copy) of this story for an honest review! Total Star Rating: 3.5 Stars What It’s About: 6/21/2023 0 Comments Dillard pilgrim at tinker creekI feel as though I stand at the foot of an infinitely high staircase, down which some exuberant spirit is flinging tennis ball after tennis ball, eternally, and the one thing I want in the world is a tennis ball.” It spills toward me streaming over a series of sandstone tiers, down and down, and down. Between the dangling wands of bankside willows, and Osage orange, I see the creek pour down. The channel here is straight as an arrow grace is itself an archer. It is so much sky, a fallen shred caught in the cleft of banks. Under the bridge and beyond it the water is flat and silent, blued by distance and stilled by depth. In the far distance I can see the concrete bridge where the road crosses the creek. You may wake and look from the window and breathe the real air, and say, with satisfaction or longing, “This is it.” But if you look up the creek, if you look up the creek in any weather, your spirit fills, and you are saying, with an exulting rise of the lungs, “Here it comes!” I look up the creek and here it comes, the future, being borne aloft as on a winding succession of laden trays. 6/21/2023 0 Comments Ariadne jennifer saint reviewsThanks to NetGalley and Flatiron for providing an advanced copy on exchange for an honest review. Ultimately, ARIADNE would have benefited from a dual narrative (a la The Lost Apothecary) or the addition of a third focal character (Pasiphae seems an obvious choice, and there’s certainly enough material there). Saint’s writing certainly isn’t at fault this is just a case of thin source material and, I suspect, an unwillingness to depart from it for the sake of better storytelling. I was powerfully tempted to Google what happened to Ariadne and be done with it. While the first 20-or-so chapters of ARIADNE offer excellent balance between narrative interiority and external action, the latter half of the book is slow and plodding, and relies overmuch on Phaedra and Ariadne thinking their thoughts and feeling their feelings. While both writers share a concept – Greek myth, but with the rich interiority of a novel – Saint chose to focus on a character whose canonical presence in Greek myth doesn’t provide sufficient opportunities for plot production. Jennifer Saint’s debut shows a lot of promise, but comparisons to Madeline Miller will harm this book more than help find its readership. After all this time, it doesn't really matter how tasty that sandwich is, it's not enough to satisfy my hunger. However, with a near 18-month gap between novels, suddenly I'm no longer a peckish reader looking for a sandwich, I'm a starving man looking for a hearty, nutritious, three-course meal only to be delivered yet another sandwich. When this series was producing a book a month, it was kind of like reaching for another sandwich to stave off that hunger and being satisfied with what you got. Soon you'll either be wanting another sandwich, or something more substantial. They're more of a light lunch, and while they are tasty, they won't keep you satisfied for long. However, sandwiches aren't really a complete meal on their own. There's nothing wrong with a good sandwich. For the sake of this review, let's compare each of the books in this series to a pretty tasty sandwich. |
